Who are we?
Conscious of being a Worcester Society, we consider ourselves fortunate in having the Swan Theatre in Worcester, where, since 1966 we started staging our Spring shows. The theatre is now run by Worcester Live and since 2007 has become our main venue for our bi-yearlytwo large scale musical productions each year. We usually perform one show in the Spring (April) and one in the Autumn (October).
In 1981 with the support of members and friends, the society purchased its own home at St Mary’s Hall, Northfield Street, Worcester, where we rehearse and stage our smaller productions and hold social events for members.
WODS consistently produce great high quality amateur theatre productions with a strong emphasis on Musicals, and we have been very fortunate that a number of our musical productions have continued to win regional awards for Best Musical from the National Operatic & Dramatic Association (NODA). In addition to ourWe stage 2 two larger scale musical productions eacha year at The Swan Theatre in Worcester, we also produce as well as smaller productions that are performed on the stage in our own rehearsal spacevenue.
We usually rehearse on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 10pm. Tuesday is often usedually for Principal members of cast and Wednesday is as our main rehearsal night, however rehearsal requirements clearly vary from show to show. Wednesday is for all cast members, as well as any non-cast members of the society who wish to pop down to watch and socialise. All rehearsals are held at our own rehearsal space venue (St. Mary’s Hally) in the centre of Worcester.
We also have a thriving and awarding-winning Youth Section (WODYS) which offers the opportunity for youngsters aged between 8 and 18 years to get involved in musical theatre. Our youngsters often progress and perform in WODS itself, and many have also taken up places at leading performing arts colleges and pursued careers in performing in the West End and beyond. See www.wodys.com for further information about youth section.
